My Fitness Mantra

by Yamuna Bhagwat

A dancer, a mom, a professional, Yamuna wears many hats! “I am a classical dancer, learning, teaching, practicing and performing Bharatanatyam for the last 14 years. I have imbibed this art form to an extent that I sometimes wonder if I breathe air or dance.” “Dancing is very important to me and I always take care to maintain my health and body so I can continue to grow as a dancer and performer. For me, Fitness and Nutrition are the key ingredients to success and many of us tend to neglect this for lack of time in a stressed environment.”

A day in the life of a Bharatnatyam dancer and a working mother

“My typical day starts at 5 in the morning with a glass of hot water, lime and honey followed by some dry fruits. I then either take a walk for about 3 – 4 kms or practice Yoga or dance for about 30 – 45 minutes. After I have sweated it out, I relax for about 5 – 10 minutes to calm my body and mind. This is then followed by a short prayer and a wholesome breakfast consisting of some fiber, green salads, sprouts and fresh fruits or fruit juices. Breakfast is the most important meal, it gives me the energy I need to take on the challenges of the day. I keep my lunch and dinner very simple with either little rice or chapattis with some dal and vegetables. “
“During the day, I ensure that I keep myself hydrated and drink at least 2- 3 liters of fluids in the form of water or fresh juice. When I’m hungry between meals I usually snack on digestive biscuits or cut vegetables or fruits. Finally, after my day’s work at office I’m home with my family and I make it a point to spend quality time with my kids and husband.”
“It’s not impossible to create a work life balance, all you need is a little focus and discipline and you too can be a SUPERMOM!”
